Job Responsibilities

The School of Business at St. John Fisher University invites applications and nominations for the position of Open Rank Professor and Chair of its Management and Marketing Department starting in Summer 2024. The School of Business supports a teacher-scholar model and is committed to being “high touch.” As such, faculty are expected to balance research, teaching, and service expectations while also engaging with students and the Fisher community.

The incumbent will oversee the Department of Management and Marketing, teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to management or marketing, conduct academic research, and fulfill service obligations to the University, Rochester business community, and the academy. As department chair, the incumbent will provide strategic leadership, supervise and mentor 10+ full-time faculty and various adjunct faculty, manage course scheduling and faculty assignments, engage with business and community leaders, and serve as both a product and enrollment champion for the programs and courses offered by the department.

Teaching responsibilities may include both undergraduate- and graduate-level courses. Course delivery will include traditional classroom (i.e., face-to-face), online, and hybrid modalities. The successful candidate will be expected to introduce new teaching techniques, evaluate student progress, and engage and motivate students through interactive techniques, experiential learning, and other innovative teaching practices. The normal teaching load is three courses per semester (Fall and Spring), but the department chair position comes with a three-course reduction per academic year. Options exist for additional teaching during the summer months.

The successful candidate will 1) demonstrate the capacity and willingness to serve as department chair for a multi-year term with options for renewal, subject to satisfactory performance; 2) engage in thought leadership by producing and publishing original, discipline-based scholarship in refereed journals; 3) maintain an active research pipeline and ongoing classification as “Scholarly Academic” under the guidelines of AACSB International; 4) exhibit an established track record of teaching effectiveness and innovation; and 5) actively participate in service and outreach activities. St. John Fisher University supports scholarship and teaching in several ways, including a yearly grant to faculty and competitive University-wide grants that are available to faculty applicants the Provost’s Office. The University also provides administrative help in securing external funding.

Service and outreach will take on a variety of forms. These can include but are not limited to academic advising and student mentoring, curriculum design and development, assurance of learning, committee work, and support for accreditation, student recruitment, advising, retention, and co?curricular activities. In addition, it is expected that the incumbent will advocate for the Department, School, and University through engagement with the Rochester business community, cultivate relationships, and be willing to translate academic research into formats suitable for business professionals to help shape business practices.

Education / Experience

  • A terminal degree in management, marketing or a related discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States, able to provide proof of their permanent right to work in the US on day 1 of employment, and available to start on or around July 1, 2024.
  • A distinguished record of teaching and scholarship that would be consistent with being classified as Scholarly Academic.
  • Evidence of introducing effective innovative and engaging teaching practices.
  • Evidence of collaboration and a commitment to the University’s shared governance model.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups/populations and in creating a culture of trust, transparency, collegiality, and innovation.
