POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Academic Director (AD) for the MBA program provides overall strategic program leadership in close partnership with the Senior Assistant Dean, Student Affairs. The AD develops and executes effective multi-year strategic and tactical plans to ensure that the program achieves its goals in alignment with the mission of the GSM. The AD works with the faculty and staff to continuously improve the student experience and student outcomes; and consequently, to improve the program’s reputation and the resources available to it. The AD assesses the MBA market and launches initiatives to keep the program relevant and competitive. The AD is the champion, chief innovation officer and caretaker for all academic and administrative matters related to instruction for the various MBA programs offered at the GSM. They will partner with the Senior Assistant Dean, Student Affairs who is responsible for the strategic, program and people management for admissions, student services and career development. 

The AD, who will also receive a 50% faculty appointment in the Lecturer title series (details below) to teach in the program (Twelve Quarter units annually expected), will be appointed the Graduate Program Committee Chair by the Dean of the Graduate School of Management. The position is contingent on funding and pending administrative approval. Salary is based on ability and experience.
note: This position is part of a 100% FTE appointment. 

Specific Responsibilities of the Academic Administrator (50% appointment)

Administration/Management of Programs (85%)
•Working with the Faculty, ensure the MBA degree is current, relevant, and valuable for students. Coordinate faculty review of the program curriculum, identify areas for improvement and facilitate continuous improvement.
•Manage instructional activities of the MBA programs. Identify, assign, and schedule faculty to deliver courses. Lead instructors through any challenging situations. Oversee course evaluations and provide counsel for faculty improvements. Coordinate with other GSM programs as necessary.
•Coordinate recruitment searches for new lecturers to fill instructional gaps. Recommend search committees and ensure needs of the MBA programs are being made. Ensure new instructors are approved by GSM Recruitment Committee. Also advise senate faculty recruitment searches.
• Assist faculty with development of new courses. Submit new courses to GSM Committee on Courses for approval.
• Coordinate all requests for Academic Student Employees (Teaching Assistants and Readers) for various courses with the Associate Dean and Academic Operations.
• Oversee the Assurance of Learning process for the MBA program. During the Graduate Council’s program review and AACSB continuous improvement review, collaborate with staff to provide materials required in a timely manner. Implement any programmatic changes required by the Graduate Council or recommended by AACSB.
• Head the Admissions Committee and provide thought partnership for the Sr. Assistant Dean on new student recruitment and admissions process, as well as career development to meet the program’s reputational and resource goals, as well as desired student outcomes
• Serve as the representative of the faculty to students. Participate in new student orientations. Provide oversight over student academic advisory. Serve as the Graduate Advisor.
• Ensure an exceptional student experience in all academic and co-curricular aspects of the MBA program. Attend meetings with MBA students and the student leaders for consultation and feedback. Respond to student feedback on academic matters. Collaborate with the Senior Assistant Deans of Finance and Administration, and Student Affairs, on staffing and resource needs for the program. Help coordinate special activities such as international student exchanges, professional certification programs, and independent studies.
• Reach out to other units at UC Davis to explore collaborative opportunities.
• Notify the Dean of any administrative coordination initiatives involving the office of Graduate Studies.
• Call and preside over regular MBA Program faculty meetings.
• Attend regular GSM leadership meetings.

University and Public Service (10%)
• Cultivate relationships with appropriate firms and industry in California for placement, admissions, fundraising and remaining connected to the latest developments in the profession.
• Lead curricular changes with the Graduate Program Committee and, where necessary, shepherd those changes through Academic Senate councils and committees for approval.

Professional Competence (5%)
• Maintain continual professional growth by engaging in activities such as maintaining membership in professional societies and associations, participating in professional events and conferences that focus on the practice of accountancy, management and other related issues, or presentation of executive education programs.

Specific Responsibilities of the Lecturer (50% appointment)

Responsibilities include course preparation and presentation of lectures, preparation and grading of exams, office hours outside of class, and supervision of teaching assistants. This lecturer appointment will serve as part of the Academic Director position for the Graduate School of Management (MBA programs). This appointment is expected to teach at least 12 units per year. Salary is based on ability and experience.

Unit 18 Lecturers are governed under a collective bargaining agreement (American Federation of Teachers (AFT) – Non-Senate Instructional Unit). Under this contract, once a lecturer accumulates enough quarters of service, the lecturer can be reviewed for a Continuing Lecturer position. QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications(required at time of application)

Qualified candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Business Administration or a related field.Additional qualifications(required at time of start)

Additional qualifications for the lecturer portion of the recruitment include; 
a. command of the subject matter and continued growth in mastering new topics;
b. ability to organize and present course materials;
c. ability to awaken in students an awareness of the importance of the subject matter;
d. ability to arouse curiosity in beginning students and to stimulate advance students to do creative work; and,
e. achievements of students in their field.Preferred qualifications(other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

Prior to appointment, the preferred incumbent should have at least five years of administrative experience in higher education programs, preferably in a business school. Ph.D. qualified candidates with college- and university-level committee experience may also apply.
