POSTING DETAILS
Posting Number: 370
Job Title: Assistant Professor, Economics & Business
Is this a tenure track position? Yes
Position Status: Full-time

Position Summary:
Colorado College seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics and Business to begin in August 2024. We invite applicants from a variety of fields of business to contribute to the department’s new interdisciplinary Business, Economics, and Society major. We hope our new colleague’s field will complement our existing expertise (see long list of fields below under “minimum qualifications”). Salary and summer support will be competitive with other liberal arts economics and business faculty positions.

Colorado College is a private, undergraduate, selective liberal arts institution enrolling approximately 2,200 students. One distinguishing feature of Colorado College is its Block plan, in which professors teach, and students take, one course at a time. Each block is three and a half weeks long with class most weekdays for approximately 3 hours per day for eighteen contact days, allowing unique teaching and learning strategies like field trips and immersive experiences.

A successful candidate will have:

  • A PhD in Business or related fields (ABD, DBA, and JD candidates with experience conducting scholarly research will also be considered)
  • Excellent teaching promise
  • Active research agenda aimed at peer-reviewed publications commensurate with selective liberal arts institutions (For reference, faculty cvs are here; college requirements for tenure are found here on pp. 18-20; the department statement on scholarship is found here.)
  • Ability to contribute to the Business, Economics, and Society major by teaching broadly across the business curriculum
  • Willingness to teach basic financial accounting and financial statement concepts (no experience expected)
  • Interest in contributing to the College’s General Education program

Responsibilities for this position entail teaching five courses annually plus advising students’ senior theses, which counts as a sixth course. One or two of the courses will be our principles of financial accounting which blends elements of an introduction to business and basic accounting for liberal arts students, not accounting majors. Successful candidates do not need to have any experience teaching financial accounting; for those interested in support with learning to teach principles of financial accounting, the department offers course materials and training. Faculty are also expected to maintain an active research program and engage in college service, as described in the Faculty Handbook on pp. 18-20.

Colorado College is committed to becoming an antiracist institution. We are working to foster an inclusive environment in which students and employees of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives can learn, work, and thrive. Preferred Qualifications:
Undergraduate teaching experience and managerial or operational experience in a business setting.

Minimum Qualifications:
A PhD or ABD in Business or related fields (or DBA or JD) and experience conducting scholarly research. Candidates should have fields of expertise that will complement rather than duplicate our existing expertise (i.e., NOT candidates whose only field of expertise is organizational behavior, nonprofit, entrepreneurship, strategy, consumer behavior, public policy, or judgment and decision making). We are open to all fields that complement our expertise. Complementary fields include but are not limited to: finance, accounting, international business, quantitative marketing, operations, business law, ethics, and sustainability.

  • Please provide details on your willingness and ability to teach broadly across the business curriculum, either here or in your cover letter. By “teach broadly” we mean teaching both in your area of deepest comfort and in adjacent or non-adjacent areas, keeping in mind that at liberal arts colleges we typically teach well outside our areas of deepest comfort and thus you might teach courses for which you have minimal formal schooling, if any. For example, a successful candidate might teach finance and accounting and research methods courses, or they might teach operations and business analytics and real estate courses, or they might teach international business and communications and business ethics courses, to name some possible combinations. As a further example, our current faculty teach broadly as follows: Miller-Stevens teaches non-profit management, business and society, investments, and accounting courses. Rader teaches management and organizations, research methods, principles of financial accounting, and previously marketing, negotiation, decision-making, and first-year writing courses. Diaz Ferraro teaches strategy, principles of financial accounting, plus soon marketing and entrepreneurship courses. As you provide details on your ability and willingness to teach broadly in the Business Economics and Society Major, you may wish to reference our course catalog at https://www.coloradocollege.edu/academics/curriculum/catalog/departmental/business-economics-and-society/index.html, as well as mention courses you might propose beyond those in our catalog, again keeping in mind that you do not need deep expertise in all subjects that you would teach at an undergraduate liberal arts institution.
