Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Academic Department Chair is responsible for ensuring the proper management and educational focus of the department’s staff, physical equipment, and other resources. A strong candidate should be ambitious, accomplished, energetic, inclusive, collaborative, future-oriented and innovative leader to expand Bowie State University’s entrepreneurship and marketing ecosystem across the university, in the local community and throughout the state and region, to lead development of educational experiences for students with a commitment to ethical and sustainable business development. The Department Chair will be a prominent leader working across the university with the goal of providing students with applied, immersive learning opportunities that have impact on the region, communities, and neighborhoods. The candidate will also have demonstrated strong academic and team leadership including effective change management, the ability to serve as an outstanding faculty colleague and mentor, including leading the department’s participation in the university’s move to an R2 institution, and can implement the department mission and vision, including fund raising and diversity efforts, through synergistic interaction with the wider college, university, and community.
The Department Chair will lead development of the new entrepreneurship and marketing department, update the curricula through collaboration and transparency, and ensure the overall academic experience is consistent with the mission of the College of Business and the University. The Department Chair will provide exceptional educational opportunities for traditionally underserved students.
Responsibilities:
The successful Entrepreneurship and Marketing Chair will work with the necessary individuals and offices to carry out the following responsibilities.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Maintains academic quality and departmental vitality through the oversight, recruitment, and retention of faculty, staff, and students.
- Ensures smooth daily operation of the department’s faculty, staff, and physical facilities and schedules.
- Monitor existing programs and manage curriculum revisions and updates.
- Manage curriculum development proposals for new courses and programs.
- Manages the departmental budget and physical and technological facilities.
- Ensure that catalog changes are maintained in an efficient and timely manner.
- Collect data for institutional effectiveness reports for programs to be submitted for accreditation purposes.
- Schedule undergraduate and graduate courses each semester (fall, winter, spring, summer).
- Assign instructors to teach courses each semester.
- Manage textbook adoptions for programs.
- Involves faculty and other stakeholders in broad decision-making and planning.
- Communicates information concerning policies, decisions, procedures, and activities to the department.
- Attracts and maintains a distinguished and diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
- Supports and develops the vision, mission, and future goals of the department and the university.
- Fosters positive morale and cohesiveness throughout the department.
- Collaborate with enrollment/admissions teams in recruiting students.
- Cooperate with academic advisors to ensure appropriate student support.
- Advocates for and supports the university through extracurricular activities including, but not limited to, open houses and graduation ceremonies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Implements university and department policies.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Mentors and guides faculty so that they may better mentor students, set scholarly goals, investigate creative interests within the field, and accomplish professional goals.
- Maintains academic excellence by observing and collaborating with faculty.
- Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
- Evaluate instructors who teach entrepreneurship and marketing programs.
Teaching Responsibilities:
As a faculty member, the Entrepreneurship and Marketing Chair will teach graduate and undergraduate courses in his/her area of expertise in various teaching modalities. The teaching load is one course per semester for a Department Chair.

Experience
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in a professorial capacity required; full professorship preferred.
- Demonstrated record of scholarship, teaching, and service with underserved students.
- Experience in incubating, accelerating, and promoting successful new ventures in minority communities from discovery to proof of concept to launch and growth.
- Track record of industry or academic thought leadership and high-impact use of social media.
- Proven ability to initiate and sustain collaborative endeavors across teams to build and execute a vision.
- Expertise mentoring and advising entrepreneurial ventures at all stages of development, collaborating with founders, investors, mentors, and working experience of new venture financing.
Education
A Ph.D. in Entrepreneurship or Marketing preferred; Ph.D. or DBA in Management, Business, or related field will also be considered.

- Possess practical entrepreneurship experience and leadership.
- Ability to generate resources and support for entrepreneurial ventures at the university through lifelong learning, certificate programs, partnerships, grants, and fundraising.
- Demonstrate a track record of teaching and mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs, a proven ability to envision, initiate and lead partnerships and externally focused, field-based initiatives.
- Ability to conduct research that makes both scholarly and practical contributions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and work with individuals at all levels of the university.
- Ability to create, maintain, analyze, and negotiate the department budget.
- Strong commitment to collaboration, interdisciplinarity, and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Ability to analyze, anticipate, and schedule course offerings.
- Attention to detail with a focus on thoroughness and quality.
- High integrity and ethical standards.
- Demonstrate an interest in, and ability to, co-creating a robust ecosystem of curricular and extra-curricular activities.
- Demonstrate the ability to work with diverse groups/populations and with multiple stakeholder groups spanning the private, public, and nonprofit sectors.
