The College of Business at Florida Atlantic University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Marketing. 

The Department of Marketing, which includes the Hospitality and Tourism Program, includes 25+ full-time and adjunct faculty on two campuses (Boca Raton, FL, and Davie, FL) and is responsible for the creation and delivery of high-quality original scholarly research and other intellectual contributions; significant service to the programs’ disciplines, industries and the university; and undergraduate and graduate degree programs as well as certificate and executive education programs. The Marketing Department has an established track record of excellence and high productivity in all areas of teaching, research and service, and it is predicted to see continued growth in both enrollments and offerings in the future. 

We are searching for an experienced, creative leader who will bring energy and passion to these efforts in a collaborative and collegial multi-disciplinary department. This individual will provide strategic leadership and a vision for excellence in all aspects of the department’s academic mission for both the Marketing and the Hospitality and Tourism programs.  

We are open to hiring either a tenured faculty member with credentials that merit an appointment at the rank of professor at FAU, or a non-tenured faculty member with a Ph.D. and extensive academic administrative experience. 

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Business, the Chair will set the set the standards of intellectual engagement and accomplishment for the department; ensure that the department is run professionally, responsibly and effectively; and support our faculty, staff and students so they can perform to their highest potential.  In this role, the Chair will be responsible for: 

  • Managing all aspects of daily operations of the department and its programs on all campuses.
  • Developing and governing the use of departmental resources, including spending and budget planning, within the frameworks set by the college and university policy and in close collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Finance and Operations in the College of Business.
  • Assuring faculty excellence through recruitment, supervision, mentoring and development, and evaluation of merit for promotion and tenure. The Chair will also be responsible for the management and development of departmental staff and graduate assistants. 
  • Representing the Department, College and University to external constituencies.
  • Engaging with businesses and the community to develop effective partnerships benefitting the department, its faculty and its students.  
  • Participating collaboratively with the FAU Foundation and development officers on external fundraising efforts on behalf of the College and the Department. 
  • Conducting departmental strategic planning, producing annual reports, and managing the record keeping and reporting required for institutional analysis and for AACSB and SACS accreditations, as well as participating in accreditation maintenance and review processes.
  • Recruiting and retention of students and majors, including promoting Marketing and Hospitality programs to potential students, as well as maintaining contact with alumni.

As a full-time university faculty member, the Chair also will be required to participate in teaching, service to the university and stakeholder communities, and research and scholarly activities as appropriate to their assignment.

Qualifications: 

  • An earned doctorate in marketing or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Either: 

(1) Scholarly credentials that merit appointment at the rank of tenured professor in the FAU Department of Marketing, with a preference for those with experience in academic and/or industry administrative leadership; 

Or

(2) Academic credentials that would merit appointment in a non-tenure-track faculty position plus at least 10 years of academic administrative leadership experience or some combination of industry and academic administrative leadership, with a preference for those with scholarly research activity. 

Administrative leadership can include a variety of roles that would demonstrate experience with tasks such as (but not limited to):

  • innovation in new program development; 
    • budgeting and financial management; 
    • curriculum management and scheduling; 
    • industry/community engagement efforts;
    • assessment and/or accreditation responsibilities;
    • promotional or recruiting efforts in an academic setting;
    • academic fundraising efforts;
    • employee recruitment, supervision, development, and evaluation.
  • Significant teaching experience, including experience teaching in fully online or hybrid delivery platforms, and demonstrated teaching excellence.
  • A demonstrated record of collegiality and ability to work collaboratively. 
  • Proven ability to engage with external audiences to foster collaboration and support.
  • Effective communication skills and emphasis on mentoring faculty, students, and staff.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and an ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all backgrounds.
