About this Opportunity
The Department of Marketing in the Miller College of Business at Ball State University is seeking an experienced, senior-level professional to chair the Department. The candidate will possess a record of teaching and scholarship appropriate for tenured appointment at full or associate professor rank, and administrative experience which will support appointment as department chair. The department chair reports to the Dean of the Miller College and is responsible for managing academic, operational, personnel, budgetary, and student activities within the Department. The ideal candidate will be capable in mentoring faculty, advocating for the Department, and expanding relationships with alumni, businesses, and community stakeholders. This position offers an opportunity to work with energetic and collegial faculty and staff, and align with current university and college strategic priorities. Prospective start date is July 1, 2023.

Position Function
Serve as chairperson of the department; teach 9 hours during the academic year, and engage in research and service.

Minimum Education
PhD or DBA in Marketing or a closely related business discipline from an AACSB accredited graduate program.

Minimum Experience
Minimum of five years of tenure-line faculty service and two years of administrative experience which may include, but is not limited to, course scheduling, faculty recruiting and mentoring, preparation of policy documents, management of an advisory board, service on college level committees, management of budgets, curriculum management and faculty performance assessment.

Minimum Other
Evidence of leadership and communication skills; evidence of effective team building skills. Scholarship record commensurate with appointment at senior-level academic rank.

Job Duty

  1. Serve as the department’s primary spokesperson and representative to the college, university, and external community.
  2. Provide leadership in the development and evaluation of academic programs and curriculum within the department. Guide the department’s innovations in course content, curriculum, and delivery methods. Provide direction to the department, consistent with University and College Strategic Plans.
  3. Supervise academic programs, faculty, and staff. Assign faculty teaching and service, and actively participate in all areas of responsibility, including, recruitment, compensation, performance evaluation, and career development of personnel.
  4. Act as fiscal agent for the department and allocate funds and resources in a manner designed to promote excellence, and generate student credit hours.
  5. Ensure department compliance with AACSB accreditation standards.
  6. Support college initiatives, and implement university, college, and department policies.
  7. Keep abreast of developments in the discipline, and encourage innovation in scholarship and teaching. Conduct scholarly research and publish results of research in leading academic and professional publications. Remain academically qualified as per Miller College of Business policy. Teach 9 hours annually.
  8. Actively contribute professional service to the Department, College, and University, and engage with the academic, business and broader community.
  9. Perform other related duties as assigned.
