TENURE-TRACK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF MARKETING

The Department of Marketing at James Madison University (JMU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The candidate must possess or be on track to obtain a Ph.D. in Marketing or a related field from an AACSB accredited institution at the time of employment. Candidates will be required to demonstrate an active research agenda and have a strong passion for teaching undergraduate students. Preference will be given to candidates with teaching and research interests in Professional Selling, Sales Technology, and Sales Leadership areas.

About the Department: The Department of Marketing is an academic unit of the College of Business and has 18 full-time faculty and over 900 undergraduate majors. The department places a primary emphasis on its undergraduate degree program with an innovative curriculum focusing on experiential learning through the use of client-based and/or practical projects and marketing internships. The marketing faculty take a collaborative approach to developing an inclusive environment for a diverse group of students and colleagues. The department is home to five marketing student organizations, including Pi Sigma Epsilon and the Professional Sales Club, and two marketing honor societies. Additionally, the department focuses on intercollegiate competitions such as the National Collegiate Sales Competition, the AMA Marketing Chapter competition as well as other engagement opportunities. JMU’s Marketing Department is ranked in the top 5% nationally for 2022 Best Marketing Bachelor’s Degree Schools by College Factual and ranked #7 for the Best Colleges for Marketing by University HQ, 2022.

Professional sales education is an integral part of the Marketing Department’s curriculum, which includes an opportunity for students to pursue a sales concentration. The department addresses the need to develop sales proficiencies through the classroom and with the Center for Professional Sales, which has earned the Marketing Department a designation as one of Sales Education Foundation’s Top Universities for Professional Sales Education. Housed in the newly built Hartman Hall – Learning Complex, the Center for Professional Sales provides students with enhanced opportunities to learn alongside and network with corporate professionals in a dedicated facility where they can practice in the art and science of sales, develop confidence, and grow as a professional. Sales faculty members actively recruit corporate partners that will enhance students’ sales educations and create internship and career opportunities for our students. Sales faculty members also incorporate corporate partners into their sales curricula for classroom presentations and to craft training sales call role plays that reflect real-world companies, their products and services, and current objections and hurdles to selling.   

Scholarship plays an important role in the life of the department. Marketing faculty publications have appeared in many of the discipline’s leading journals, including Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of RetailingJournal of Business ResearchJournal of Professional Selling and Sales Management, and Industrial Marketing Management. Moreover, the Department of Marketing at JMU has also built a positive reputation in pedagogical research with several contributions in journals like Journal Marketing Education and Marketing Education Review. In recent years, one marketing faculty member has won the Outstanding Faculty Award presented by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), and two other faculty members have been rewarded by JMU’s Provost for their research accomplishments in the College of Business.  

About the College:  The AACSB-accredited James Madison University College of Business includes nationally ranked undergraduate and graduate programs. The College includes the Center for Professional Selling, Gilliam Center for Entrepreneurship, Small Business Development Center, Capital Markets Lab, Madison Consulting, and other programs focused on outreach and engagement with the business community. Our very successful alumni hold C-suite positions at major corporations including SAP, Fidelity, Bank of America, IBM, California Pizza Kitchen, McKinsey & Company, Deloitte, KPMG, and other Fortune 500 companies and readily engage with the College.
