The UCA College of Business invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Marketing and Management. In keeping with the University’s mission we especially encourage applicants who will further our goal of cultural, ethnic, racial, and gender diversity. The department offers undergraduate programs in marketing, management, human resources, entrepreneurship, and logistics and supply chain management. In the fall of 2020, the department included 19 full-time faculty. The Department Chair has a 12-month appointment including teaching and research responsibilities.
Position Description
Reporting to the Dean, department chairs are the chief executives of their departments and are responsible for the implementation of university, college, and department policies and strategic plans.
Specific duties of the Chair of the Department of Marketing and Management include the following:
- Ensures the integrity, inclusivity, excellence, reputation, and continuous improvement of the Department through leadership, influence, innovation, partnerships, and the advancement of the disciplines therein
- Manages departmental operations, including departmental budget, faculty workloads and evaluations, course scheduling, travel and purchasing requests, and curricular and classroom grievances
- Promotes a culture of inclusivity and support for diverse students, faculty, and staff
- Teaches courses according to expected teaching load for academic department chairs
- Maintains currency in their discipline through scholarly research and academic engagement activities
- Executes college and university policies to accurately and expediently handle student concerns and grievances
- Drives innovation in learning, and curricula by staying abreast of new opportunities related to community and industry interest
- Is responsible for regularly collecting, tracking, and analyzing key metrics in support of annual and cyclical accreditation and reporting requirements
- Promotes the Department’s programs at recruiting events and via other marketing efforts
- Administration of faculty and staff evaluations, including recommendations regarding faculty reappointment, promotion and tenure, and annual performance reviews
- Serves on the College Executive Committee and provides other service as appropriate and needed
- Works collaboratively with Enrollment Management as it relates to course scheduling, academic advisement, and transfer credit evaluations to promote student success
Required Qualifications
The Department is particularly interested in recruiting an individual who can embrace and enhance the vision of a diverse, collegial, and productive academic environment. Successful applicants for department chair will have the following required qualifications:
- Earned a PhD or similar terminal (academic) doctoral degree from an accredited university in marketing, management, logistics, entrepreneurship, or a similar discipline that aligns with the department
- Minimum of six years of full-time higher education experience, including a minimum of four years of full-time experience as a core faculty member in a discipline aligned with the terminal degree
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, including a well-developed sense of fairness and integrity
- Demonstrated record of teaching, scholarship, and service commensurate with appointment at the associate professor or professor level in the Department of Marketing and Management (The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on university and department established standards)
- Understanding of the effective administration of a university department to include curricular evaluation and design, strategic planning, faculty development, budgeting, and accreditation
- Explicitly committed to fostering academic excellence, inclusion, rigor, and distinctiveness
Preferred Qualifications
The Department is seeking a chair who will maintain our collegiality and student-focused priorities, while contributing to our growth and vision. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate all or some of the following preferred qualifications:
- Prior or current experience as department chair (or equivalent) or in another administrative role
- Dynamic leadership, clear communication, strong interpersonal skills, and a keen strategic vision
- Enthusiastic about working closely with and mentoring students
- Technically savvy, especially in the use of Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, etc.), Digital Measures, Blackboard, Zoom, Banner, Argos, and Degree Works
- Effective teaching experience at multiple levels (i.e., undergraduate and graduate) and across modalities (i.e., online and in-seat), including developing and growing programs in the specified disciplines
- Demonstrated propensity for building alliances and/or partnerships across college, university, academic, and business communities
- High-level contributor to successful AACSB accreditation effort
- Experience facilitating student-success initiatives
- Passion for working closely with and mentoring early career faculty
- Active membership in appropriate academic organizations
