HEC Montréal
Department of Marketing

Two Open Rank Managerial Professors

The Department of Marketing at HEC Montréal invites applications for two tenure-track/tenured managerial professors beginning on June 1, 2023. (Starting dates are negotiable based on individual circumstances.)

Applicants must have a PhD, or be close to completing a PhD, in marketing or a related field. While we are open to diverse disciplinary backgrounds, candidates should have an interest in teaching and conducting research in Business-to-Business Marketing, Channels of Distribution, Sales and Sales Management, Customer Service Design or Marketing Strategy.

Montréal is a fantastic international and multicultural city. It is the second-largest city in Canada and the 8th largest city in North America, with four major research universities within the city. It is a very multicultural environment with over 50% of the population speaking both French and English, while nearly 25% also speak a third language other than French or English. As evidence of this environment, Montréal is tied with Boston as the best North American city for international students (QS Best Student Cities 2022) and was listed as the 9thBest City in the World by Time Out Magazine in 2022.

Of particular interest to candidates should be Montréal’s long history as an economic hub in Canada and North America, providing a rich context to conduct research and collaborate with area businesses. Due to its history and size, Montréal has a critical mass in several business segments, including aerospace, construction and infrastructure, retail trade and fashion, creative and cultural industries, transportation and logistics, life sciences and health technology, financial services, cleantech and the green economy, information technology, artificial intelligence, video games and tourism.

HEC Montréal is an internationally renowned business school, with over 14,000 students, and trains more than 9,000 executives and managers every year. The School holds many prestigious accreditations (AACSB International, EQUIS and AMBA), and offers over 100 programs of study from bachelor’s to doctoral levels. It has 37 research chairs, including 8 Canada Research Chairs. With a faculty of over 300 professors, HEC Montréal offers programs in several languages and attracts students from 142 countries. Since its founding in 1907, the School has trained more than 100,000 students in all fields of management. (Although HEC Montréal is affiliated with the University of Montréal, it is considered and run as a separate university by the province of Québec.)

HEC Montréal was ranked 70th in terms of research contributions by North American business schools by UT Dallas for the period 2016-2020. The School provides extensive research support, including a department dedicated to helping faculty secure research funding. HEC Montréal has 25 cross-discipline research groups, including the Sales Institute, Top Executives and Strategic Management Hub, Supply Chain Forum, the Strategy as Practice Study Group and IVADO (Institute for Data Valorization: A Scientific and Economic Data Science Hub).

The Department of Marketing has a strong research focus, with 25 tenured/tenure-track research faculty and 8 teaching faculty. It houses four research chairs— the Chair in Service Marketing and Customer Experience, the RBC Financial Group Chair of Electronic Commerce, the Carmelle and Remi Marcoux Chair in Arts Management, and the Canada Research Chair in Consumer Decision-Making. It also houses The Sales Institute, which seeks to be the reference for sales education, knowledge transfer and research in Quebec and across Canada. Faculty members publish in leading journals such as Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Personal Selling & Sales Management, Journal of Retailing, Marketing Science and Journal of Consumer Research, among others. (The marketing department faculty are listed here: http://www.hec.ca/en/marketing/profs.html )

The teaching load for research faculty is 4 classes per year, with a maximum class size of 75 students. The teaching load is lighter for new faculty, faculty learning French and can be reduced throughout one’s career due to research productivity. (The majority of research faculty teach three classes per year because of their research productivity.)

Because HEC Montréal is a francophone university, candidates must become fluent speaking French – at a professional/business level – within a period of two years following their appointment. The School provides extensive support and resources to ensure that new faculty members become fluent in French, including personalized program for learning French. A significant portion of our faculty became fluent in French after joining the HEC Montréal.

Since HEC Montréal also offers courses in English, candidates must also be able to teach and write in English at a professional/business level.

Applicants must submit their application online via the Faculty Recruitment Portal (only electronic applications via this portal will be considered), as a single PDF document. Applications must include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, two letters of recommendation, sample research paper(s), teaching evaluations (if available), a teaching statement and a diversity and inclusion statement. These items must be combined in one PDF file to facilitate evaluation. In the diversity and inclusion statement, applicants are invited to demonstrate their contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Describe concrete accomplishments, past and present, as well as future aspirations to integrate equity, diversity, and inclusion through contributions to academic life through teaching, research, and service to the internal and external community.

Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit their applications before September 1, 2022. We will begin reviewing applications on September 1, 2022, however we will accept applications until the positions are filled.

HEC Montréal recognizes the crucial and indispensable contribution of women, Indigenous peoples, members of visible or ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities, and is committed to provide equal opportunities for all qualified applicants. To promote equity and excellence, the selection committee will take into account any career interruptions experienced by applicants. Applicants are invited to share the circumstances of any career interruptions and explain how these have impacted their career path. Applicants with disabilities who might need accommodations at any stage of the application process may communicate in a confidential manner with rh.ap@hec.ca .

All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply; however, in accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

We thank all applicants for their interest. However, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
