Scope of Job

We seek applicants for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Marketing position beginning Fall 2023 who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s diverse student body.

About UTRGV:It is UTRGV’s vision “To be one of the nation’s leaders in higher education, its premier Hispanic-serving institution, and a highly engaged bilingual university, with exceptional educational, research, and creative opportunities that serve as catalysts for transformation in the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.” As such, UTRGV is committed to building a diverse faculty and staff that can contribute to an enriching learning environment that strives for more equitable outcomes for student success.

UTRGV is a distributed campus – one university spanning four counties and multiple locations. Our purpose is to be a university for the entire Rio Grande Valley and beyond. Over 90% of the students enrolled at UTRGV identify as Hispanic, making UTRGV one of the top 3 universities with the highest percentage of Hispanic students. UTRGV was recently recognized by Forbes as one of the Top Colleges For Your Money and Third Way ranked UTRGV 4th nationally in terms of economic mobility.

UTRGV is currently classified as a Carnegie Tier 2 (R2) Doctoral University with High Research Activity. Research expenditures have been increasing significantly each year and a key strategic goal is to achieve R1 (Very High Research Activity) status in the coming years. In line with this goal, the Robert C. Vackar College of Business & Entrepreneurship offers a supportive environment focused on student success and on elevating the academic reputation of the college. As one of eight departments within the college, the Marketing Department currently consists of 13 full-time faculty members and offers undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees with a concentration in marketing.

We seek a new colleague with a robust research agenda who will produce high-quality research in marketing that leads to publications in leading journals in our field. Research interests and methodological approaches are open, but many of the faculty in the department focus on issues that are relevant to our bicultural border area, such as cross-cultural marketing, consumer well-being, and services marketing.

Your research agenda will be supported by, for example, competitive teaching assignments, which can be as low as three courses per year for productive researchers, a student subject pool, a neuroscience marketing lab, and a vibrant Ph.D. program.

The Edinburg/McAllen metro area has a growing population that is approaching 1 million, and U.S News & World Report recently ranked the area 3rd in the nation for high quality of life due, in part, to the comfortable subtropical climate (no need for snow shovels), proximity to the beach, and low cost of living.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in Marketing or a closely related field from an accredited institution (ABDs will be considered, but Ph.D. is required no later than the proposed start date).Demonstrated potential for high-quality research and effective teaching.Desire to work collegially with faculty and students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
To be considered for a tenured Associate Professor position, the candidate must be a tenured faculty at a peer-level or higher university and have a demonstrated record of research and teaching excellence. If you’d like to be considered at a rank other than untenured Assistant Professor, please indicate that on your application.

The position is open until filled. In line with the AMA’s job market guidelines, preliminary screening interviews will be conducted via video conference in September. For full consideration for the preliminary screening interviews, please apply by August 28, 2022! If you have any questions, please contact Xiaojing Sheng (xiaojing.sheng@utrgv.edu), Chair of the Search Committee or Peter Magnusson (peter.magnusson@utrgv.edu), Department Chair.
