The Department of Marketing at HEC Montréal invites applications for one tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Marketing Communication, beginning full time in September 2022.

Applicants must have a PhD, or be close to completing a PhD, in marketing or a related field such as media and communication studies, advertising, psychology, journalism, sociology, etc. While we are open to diverse disciplinary backgrounds, candidates should have an interest in teaching and conducting research in Marketing Communication.  Our ideal candidate will be comfortable being the department’s “subject matter expert” in Marketing Communication, including ensuring that our programs and courses cover the material our students will need to be successful in practice and research. (Note that the maximum teaching load for research faculty is 4 sections per year, with a maximum class size of 75 students. The teaching load is lighter for new faculty and can be reduced throughout one’s career due to research productivity.)

Montréal is a fantastic international and multicultural city. It is the second-largest city in Canada and the 8th largest city in North America, with four major research universities within the city. It is a very multicultural environment with over 50% of the population speaking both French and English, while nearly 25% also speak a third language other than French or English. As evidence of this environment, Montréal is tied with Boston as the best North American city for international students (QS Best Student Cities 2022).

Of particular interest to candidates should be Montréal’s long and rich history of arts, culture, multimedia and advertising.  All the top agencies, creative groups and arts groups in Montréal have HEC Montréal alumni within their ranks (actually, this is true of all businesses in Montréal). This provides our faculty with extraordinary access to practitioners for research, as well as opportunities to network, provide training, find guest speakers, etc.

Founded in 1907, HEC Montréal is Canada’s first business school, offering more than 100 management programs (BBA, MBA, MSc, PhD) across a broad spectrum of specializations. It has an enrolment of more than 15,000 students with a faculty of 300 professors. HEC Montréal offers a multilingual curriculum, with courses taught in French, English, and Spanish. The School holds a triple accreditation: AACSB International, EQUIS, and AMBA. It is in the top 5 Business schools in Canada and in the world’s 100 best universities for Business. (Although HEC Montréal is affiliated with the University of Montréal, it is considered and run as a separate university by the province of Québec.)

HEC Montréal was ranked 70th in terms of research contributions by North American business schools by UT Dallas for the period 2016-2020. The School provides extensive research support, including a department dedicated to helping faculty secure research funding. Likewise, the Department of Marketing has a strong research focus, with 28 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 6 teaching faculty. It houses three research chairs—the Carmelle and Remi Marcoux Chair in Arts Management, the Chair in Service Marketing and Customer Experience, and the RBC Financial Group Chair of Electronic Commerce—as well as The Sales Institute. Faculty members publish in leading journals such as Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Retailing, and Marketing Science, among others. The marketing department faculty are listed here: marketing department faculty<http://www.hec.ca/en/marketing/profs.html>.

The Department of Marketing is also responsible for the DESS in Marketing, Media, and Communication, a specialized graduate program that unites HEC Montréal researchers and some of the most prominent figures and organizations in the communication industry. It is also related to the Pôle Media, a hub dedicated to research, training and knowledge transfer activities in the media world.

Because HEC Montréal is a francophone university, candidates must become fluent speaking French – at a professional/business level – within a period of two years following their appointment. The School provides extensive support and resources to ensure that new faculty members become fluent in French, including personal tutoring in faculty offices (via Zoom during COVID). A significant portion of our faculty became fluent in French after joining the School.
